UN Ends Restrictions on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit

The UN Security Council gave the green light to a United States-backed measure to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip next week.

He was appointed interim leader subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed the former president in December 2024, ending over a decade of internal conflict.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that acknowledged Syria entered "a fresh chapter" following Assad's ouster.

Sharaa was under United Nations restrictions while commanding the religious organization HTS, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. The US removed HTS from a list of global extremist entities in July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

Syria's foreign minister applauded the lifting of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and supportive states for backing the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit on Monday comes after American leader Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" working toward stability to the conflict-ravaged nation.

After the meeting, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion in May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized Sharaa as a "tough guy" having a "formative history".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch in Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

The upcoming meeting will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States during this period. In September, he made history as the first Syrian leader to present to the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place within the global community" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
