Marvel's Wonder Man Preview Reveals The MCU's Most Meta TV Show Ever

The Marvel studio has heard that viewers might be feeling some superhero exhaustion, so they've opted to incorporate this exact concept into their next superhero show.

That's right, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it promises a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The preview, which premiered on Oct. 10, also quietly moved the Wonder Man launch date back from its initial late 2025 slot into early 2026.

Why one more superhero film? People is weary of superheroes. Why go see them in the theater? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the entire genre of storytelling.

The interviewer responds: "Have you given any thought about the cast?"

The trailer then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's viewing the conversation on his mobile device, and the preview ends.

What We Know Regarding Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a meta take on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show features Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, a film star who transforms into a super-powered being (the hero Wonder Man).

The supporting cast includes actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC officer P. Cleary.

Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy

We don't know much else about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that the studio intends to poke some fun at itself.

In the aftermath of Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears like the studio is fully committed on meta-humor. Will this approach succeed without the celebrity appeal of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
