Conservative responses to the partial release of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with certain supporters of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives defended the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's name and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
However, some conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some are not, including prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative voices to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a complete release. In February, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen information.
